Thornhill Walks to Explore

If you’re looking for things to do, see and explore around Thornhill, then there’s no better place to start than The BQA Hotel. A relatively hidden gem in Dumfries and Galloway, Thornhill is home to numerous beautiful, stunning, engaging, and historic sites. If you’re a fan of the TV series Outlander, we’ve even thrown in a couple of filming locations for the series, too!

We’ve put together five of our favourite Thornhill walks. Whether it’s a morning walk for the dogs or a longer, exploration hike, we’ve got just the thing.

Exploring Thornhill

We’ll start with the shortest Thornhill walk, and move on to the longest. All of these routes are suitable for dogs and remain open throughout the year. Just a few gentle reminders and top tips for your travels first…

  • Wear sturdy footwear – All of these routes include tracks, fields and trails which can often be muddy and uneven.
  • Keep dogs on leads around livestock. There are plenty of places where you can let your four-legged friend run free (although none are fenced in, so be mindful of their recall!), but this is an agricultural area, so please respect the access code, our farmers, and their livestock.
  • Leave gates as you find them. Some may have been left open intentionally. If you pass through a closed gate, please ensure that you close it behind you.
  • Take your litter home, please.
  • Bag it and Bin it! Please pick up after your dog, especially in the village or if your dog decides to go on or close to one of the tracks.
  • Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints

You can also view our Local Activities in Dumfries and Galloway webpage for more information on other activities to enjoy whilst staying in Thornhill.

Route 1: Thornhill Village Circular

Distance: 2.6km

A great way to start the day and the perfect short route to stretch the legs, give the dogs (and kids) a run and blow away the cobwebs. This walk takes you right around the edge of the village, through acres of native woodland, bringing you back along the main street up to the hotel.

The tracks are well trodden and easy to follow. Once you get into the woods, keep the village on your right, and you can’t go wrong! There are lots of trails to explore, along with some ancient and beautiful trees.

This walk should take you around half an hour, but you can shorten it a bit if you prefer. The tracks are uneven and can become muddy in places, so they may not be best suited for pushchairs without serious off-road tyres. Keep an eye out for Red Kites, Red Squirrels and even deer on occasion.

Route 2: Defiance Wood

Distance: 3.14km

In addition to being a gorgeous walk and a great circular route, Defiance Wood has quite a special history. Covering approximately 10 acres, Defiance Wood was planted by local schoolchildren in 2005 and forms a corridor linking areas of established woodland. The wood was planted with a mixture of native tree species like those used to build Nelson’s Trafalgar Fleet. Keep an eye out for Oak, Ash, Elder and Birch.

This is a relatively gentle walk, offering fantastic views of Thornhill and extending to Tynron Doon on clear days. Deviate from the suggested route and explore lots of different trails and tracks. Keep an eye out for local wildlife! If you’d prefer not to walk back along the main road, head back through the woods and cut through the field linking to Coo Lane and back into the village.

Route 3: Dabton Loch Circular

Distance: 5.16km
Dabton Loch
Dabton Track

This slightly longer walk is relatively flat and easy going, taking in some gorgeous woodland and a circular route around Dabton Loch. From the front door of the hotel, this walk takes you down West Morton Street, out of the village and up towards the golf course. Here you’ll turn onto a peaceful, tree-lined track known locally as Froggy Lane. Follow this to the end and you’ll arrive at Dabton Loch, a peaceful, private fishing loch belonging to the Buccleuch Estate. Take the circular path around the loch to explore the native woodland. On the way back, you’ll take a right-hand turn off Froggy Lane, down into the woods. This trail will bring you to Defiance Wood, with a short walk across the fields to Coo Lane and back to the Hotel. Perfect for wildlife spotting, bird watching and a great one for the dogs!

Route 4: Crichope Linn via Cample

Distance: 10.93km
Crichope Linn

This walk takes you through the village, over the golf course and through the village of Cample, where you’ll pass old railway buildings, an old mill and cross Cample Water. It does include quite a lot of time on roads, but these quiet, country lanes are generally a pleasure, and we promise, it’s worth it!

A spectacular hidden gem and a must-see for visitors to the area, Crichope Linn is a well-hidden, ancient gorge, carved out by the river over centuries through towering sandstone walls. This is the first stop for Outlander fans as this was one of the series’ filming locations. Walk in the footsteps of Jamie Fraser and explore this stunning location. Wander through the woods, past natural sandstone arches, and take in the waterfalls. The gorge walls are steep and high, and the paths are narrow, so please watch your step, take your time, keep dogs on a lead and keep a close eye on children for safety reasons. The walk back takes you past the old railway station and back down the hill into Thornhill.

Route 5: River Nith & Drumlanrig Castle

Distance: 12km
Drumlanrig Castle

South River Nith
River Nith Route Footpath Sign

Our second recommendation for Outlander fans, and a great walk overall. This route takes you along the banks of the river Nith and up to the spectacular Drumlanrig Castle. Starting from the hotel, you’ll head up East Morton Street and across to Boat Brae, walking down the hill and over the Nith bridge. Here, you’ll turn right and head along the riverside walk, all the way up to the parkland of Drumlanrig Castle. Walkers here regularly spot Red Kites, Deer, Hares and even the occasional otter if you’re fortunate! At the end of this path, you’ll arrive at the Castle itself, where you’ll find a cafe, adventure playground, gift shop and beautiful gardens. Please check the Drumlanrig Castle website before visiting for the latest opening times.

Drumlanrig is steeped in history and has been used as a filming location for many productions, including Outlander, featuring in the episode ‘Vengeance is mine’. Learn more about the Outlander tour here. Head back along the byway and back up the hill to Thornhill at your leisure.
